Epoxidation of alkenes with peracids: biological significance
In the animal organism, epoxidation is used to break down condensed aromatic hydrocarbons.
With the enzyme cytochrome P-450, e.g. benzo [a] pyrene is converted into a diepoxide in the liver. A strong carcinogenic effect is ascribed to this epoxide.
